Haven't post anything here for a long time.
This morning, I saw an article in local newspaper regarding the opening of another university in Cambodia.
More info can be found Here

Some interesting facebook discussion on this topic

Ok, as I always, I tend to spend a few minutes talking about a topic, but I'm making it short since I'm writing now.. so here we go:

For my own personal reason, ZAMAN University should be established in Cambodia, simply because that's where my future career will be.
It becomes a little less simple from an objective point of view.
The whole point of opening this school stems from an arrogant yet justified idea that universities in Cambodia are simply crappy, or what could be referred to as "street universities". That's particularly true for private universities in Cambodia.

Nobody would be against the idea of establishing a university with high quality in Cambodia. The question remaining then is: Will ZAMAN be a good school? There are no definite answers to this, but at least I can present a few challenges that the school will have to deal with.

The first and foremost challenge is funding. Financial need is very high to establish a good university... you need a campus/building, technologically-advanced equipment, library resources etc.
Let's say that donors in Turkey buy into this idea and offer funding; we still face another important challenge: human resource. i.e. finding qualified instructors. A good university requires a good number of PhD holders and MA/MS degree holders.

I personally can hold an instructor's position, and I know many people with high academic background, so this can partially help. There are probably some scholars in Cambodia who might be willing to take part in this too. But again the problem is we have to come up with a good curriculum. This means that we cannot just ask anybody to teach just anything. Let's say we want to open the Department of Political Science. This alone will need at least 6 to 7 people who can teach politics in different fields (e.g. Political Theory, Politics of Southeast Asia, Comparative Politics etc.) as well as different levels of courses designed for each year (e.g. for freshman or for junior). This, in my mind, will be a big challenge. Yet, THAT DOESN'T MEAN WE CAN'T DO IT.

I do not object Zaman University being established in Cambodia. It's just that there are a number of things the university needs to think about: (1) make school fees affordable to Cambodians; give away scholarships to the excellent; (2) ensure that the instructors are paid to the extent they deserve to be paid -- and the calculation should take into account the fees students are willing to pay as well, not just based on PURE profit; (3) deliver high quality education. It's good to make profit; it's just inhumane to live in an ocean of wealth while others are suffering.

I think no matter how good their staffs are, or how good the school environment is, it doesn't work if their marketing strategies are poor. I experienced in Newton Thilay University, (now combined to PPIU), I admitted the teacher and dean are master and PHD degree holder, even their curriculum and study system are damn good, yet not many people come in cos poor marketing strategies that cannot earn trust from customers   waiting to see another ZAMAN anyway

Smile at me, smile at me; and I smile at you, smile at you

Nah, some schools don't even advertise, and whereas many students still apply to study there. ( IFL should be a good example, only 800 students can enroll each year )
Yet, some schools appear in media very often, still cannot get lots of students ( Limkokwing I guess )

    Back on topic,
ZAMAN University's tuition fee might not cheap, maybe 4000$/year ( ZAMAN high school almost 2000$/year  )
    Just 2000$ more u can study abroad....hmm

U know that IFL, RUPP, or other school are famous for a long time so they don't have to do promotion, but for new school and try to compete/challenge with other strong school, it's a bit hard and need more promotion

I'm sorry Mr. RedThom not almost 2 000$/ year but 3 000$/ year
around 2 000$ just only for 1st, 2nd rank in the class(At ZAMAN) only. The 3rd, must pay about 2 000$/year :mlooking:
Anyways, they also got scholarship too......

    For University I think might be not 4 000$/year, maybe 5 000$.
You know Limkokwing Unisersity right ? Do U know how much, you have to pay for study their a year ? :em39:

go to study in Malaysia is better.. My little bro studies at Nilai, spends $5000/year for his school fee.. in fact, it's only $3500, but he pays through agency, that's why it costs more... :em19: :em19: :em19:

I do agree. Anyway also think the each school curriculum are very important and have a great impact to the students. I really appreciate my university (not a famous one, and now also no longer existed), it taught me OPERACY course, career development, self-improvement... it's a very good guide. Less or much, I knew I improved as a human being after those courses. Never regret of joining that disappeared university, and much appreciate it :)

It's Newton Thilay University? Have u ever heard? :em47: But all its students are graduated already by this time i think. Before Teacher Thilay closed this univer, he transferred all students to PPIU :em28:
